| WIAD is an outstanding non-profit extra-curricular program entering its 30th season of providing a rigorous curriculum and academic challenges to the public and private high school students of our state. WIAD provides opportunities for students to experience the challenges of rigorous team and individual competition. It is designed to:
WIAD challenges students to push themselves beyond what they thought academically possible, motivating and recapturing their interest in academics. The program rewards the heroes of the academic arena. It encourages "C" students to excel beyond their current achievement level and teaches other students they have strengths they can contribute to the team. This team concept creates a positive school image and academic role models, changes students' attitudes and encourages public interest and awareness of outstanding programs in Wisconsin schools. The best athlete may not end up in professional sports, but Academic Decathlon students continue to use their communication skills.
The curricular theme for the 2012-2013 season is Russia.
The season consists of three levels of competition -- Local Competition - All nine team members take seven written tests in
Regional Competition: 60 teams advance from Local Competition and will take seven written tests in addition to essay writing and giving a prepared speech, impromptu speech and an interview in front of two judges. State Competition: 20 teams advance from Regional Competition and will take the seven written tests (same as Local and Regional Competitions). In addition to essay writing, Decathletes will give a prepared and impromptu speech and an interview in front of two judges, as well as participate in Super Quiz -- which includes both a written test and a relay. The Super Quiz Relay is the only event open to the public.
