2011-2012 Decathlon Season

Local Competition

Tuesday, November 8, 2011

Local Competition is held at numerous sites throughout the state with written tests in:
 
  •  Art
  •  Economics
  •  Language & Literature
   
  •  Mathematics
  •  Music
  • Science

 

The overarching theme for the 2011-2012 year is "The Age of Empire." 

This year's selected novel: Heart of Darkness by Joseph Conrad

Interested high schools may enter 9-member team(s) for the November Competition. 

Schools may register more than one team, but only one team can advance to the next level.  

Each 9-member team consists of:

  • Three "A" Honor Students  (3.75 - 4.00 GPA)
  • Three "B" Scholastic Students  (3.00 - 3.74 GPA)
  • Three "C" Varsity Students  (0.00 - 2.99 GPA)

Team registration continues from Mid-May through October 7, 2011. 

Team test sites will be assigned October 21, 2011.

REGISTRATION

Registration Information is mailed to all schools before the end of May.

Interested high schools must officially register and pay the entry fee per team for the Local Competition. Contact the WIAD Office  <acadec@cesa7.k12.wi.us>  for a free copy of this year's official study guide.

New schools to the program may be eligible for a Supply Grant. 

The grant provides the majority of study materials needed to start in the program.

COMPETITION DAY SCHEDULE 

Generally the test day will begin at 9:00 a.m. and finish approximately 3 hours later.

Your starting time will be identified by your CESA - times may vary, but all tests

will be conducted in the morning.  Here is a tentative schedule:

School Size Divisions - Board Review May, 2011

All teams are assigned to a size division based on high school enrollment.

Next board review will be the spring of 2013.


The current division sizes are:

  •  Division 1 - 1250+ Enrollment
  •  Division 2 - 700 - 1249
  •  Division 3 - 285 - 699
  •  Division 4 - Under 285

Graphing Calculators Allowed -- provided it has none of the features listed in

Section III of the USAD® Calculator Policy. 

Competitors are expected to honor the that they are not to refer to information stored in the graphing calculator memory during the mathematics test.

Prohibited Calculators:

Calculators with any of the following features are NOT allowed in USAD® competitions:

  • pocket organizers
  • hand-held or laptop computers
  • electronic writing pads or pen-inut devices
  • models with an elphabetic (QWERTY) keypad; e.g. TI-92 or HP-95
  • models with paper tape
  • models that make noise
  • models that can engage in wireless communication  (transfer data or information with other calculators
  • models that require a power cord
  • models with CAS (computer algebra systems); e.g. TI-89

COACHES:   Be sure to check the Coaches' Corner for news and weekly updates.   This is a secured site for coaches' use only.

Coaches will receive the user name and password via e-mail once their

team is registered.   Password will be changed after each competition.

All scoring reports for the three levels of competitions will be posted on the

Coaches' Corner, as well as information specific to the coaches.
