Beyond the Butterfly: Middle School Girls Speak Out

Beyond the Butterfly: Middle School Girls Speak Out was filmed by groups of middle school girls, who were given PBS-compatible video cameras to document what they are thinking, feeling and doing. The girls speak candidly about themselves and their experiences. Middle school girls participated from various ethnic and socioeconomic groups and from large and small cities and towns and rural areas. They talked about school, family, body image, sexual harassment, getting good grades, drugs and alcohol, boys, peer pressure and a myriad of other topics that were important to them. Beyond the Butterfly is designed to help girls gain an understanding of the forces at work on their minds and bodies and how they can react to emerge stronger, wiser and more confident than they were as children. See the Butterfly website for video clips, the teacher guide, script and other resources.
