Splitting up: Kids in the Middle

This 30-minute documentary looks at growing up today without both parents, from the point of view of the child. Four high school teens share their early memories and experiences when their parents were splitting-up – recalling their fears, trauma, pain, and loss. With unprecedented levels of divorce and the separation of parents who never married, more children are being raised by single parents, grandparents, relatives, and in foster homes than ever before.

Children often blame themselves for problems between their parents and may attempt to get them back together. It is not uncommon for young children to withdraw or become uncooperative and aggressive. Feelings of sadness and loss, behavior problems and a decline in the level of schoolwork may happen with older children.
