The Department of Community Programs is the Community Services Agency responsible for programs and services for:
- The developmentally disabled (including persons with mental retardation, cerebral palsy, epilepsy, brain injury)
- Severely and persistently mentally ill (e.g. schizophrenia, manic-depressive illness)
- Emotionally stressed (e.g. depression, marital/family discord, anxiety)
- Persons experiencing difficulties with alcohol and other drug abuse
The Agency is sometimes referred to as the "51.42 Board", which is a reference to chapter 51, the Mental Health Act of the State Statutes. Chapter 51 provides the legal mandate for these services. The Department of Community Programs provides:
- Counseling services
- Case management
- Prevention
- Education and information programs
- 24 hour crisis intervention
The Agency contracts with facilities locally and regionally for:
- Residential living services
- Inpatient psychiatric care
- Inpatient alcoholism
- Other drug abuse treatments
- Other services for residents of Door
County who require assistance in one
of the four statutorily defined areas.
