Foster Kids, Our Kids

Foster Kids, Our Kids explores issues surrounding foster care for teens. In the United States today, there are over 500,000 children in foster care, many of them teens. Rather than residing with their biological parents, they live with relatives, trained foster parents or in residential facilities. They have been removed from their homes due to abuse, neglect, death of a parent or their own behavioral difficulties. One of the major issues facing teens in foster care is the cessation of care and benefits when they reach the age of 18. Many are lacking the skills and support needed to survive successfully on their own. Foster Kids, Our Kids includes candid interviews with current and former foster teens, foster parents and Mark Courtney, Ph.D., co-author of the report, “Foster Youth Transition to Adulthood,” outline both the positive and negative aspects of foster care.
