Hidden Homeless

Copyright 2010

The Hidden Homeless is a 30 minute documentary about four homeless teens from urban and rural areas in the Midwest. They all face the same challenges, fulfilling basic needs: finding food, shelter, clothing, and opportunities to bathe. Unlike the stereotypes of homeless adults, homeless teens make a strong effort to blend in and this determination to “fit in” makes them hard to identify. The reasons for homelessness among teens are many: parental instability or dependency issues, parental incarceration, abuse, rejection by parents and poverty. Some of the teens find temporary housing by staying with friends or relatives and are maybe referred to as “couch surfers”. The lack of stability presents obstacles in school attendance and employment when they don’t have an address or a phone number.”Suggested to raise awareness among teens and to foster classroom discussions.”
